GROW Coaching Model – A Simple Framework for Coaches

Helping Others Move Forward Starts with the Right Questions

Whether you’re a coach, manager, or someone supporting others through change, the GROW coaching model offers a powerful way to guide people from uncertainty to action. Structured yet flexible, it’s a framework that empowers clarity, ownership, and real progress — whether you’re new to coaching or developing your leadership style.

Let’s explore how it works — and why it’s worth mastering. (Originally developed by Sir John Whitmore – read more here.)

What Is the GROW Model?

GROW stands for:

  • G – Goal

  • R – Reality

  • O – Options

  • W – Will (or Way Forward)

It’s typically used in 1:1 coaching sessions to help someone get clear on what they want, reflect on where they are now, consider their choices, and commit to meaningful action.

A Quick Breakdown

G – Goal

What do you want to achieve?
Start with a specific, measurable outcome that matters to the coachee. The goal should be forward-focused and ideally within their control.

Example:
I want to feel confident applying for jobs again after redundancy.

R – Reality

What’s happening right now?
This step helps explore the current situation without judgement. It invites honest reflection and surfaces what’s already working, what’s not, and what’s getting in the way.

Example:
I haven’t updated my CV in years, and I’ve only had one interview in the last six months.

O – Options

What could you do?
Encourage the person to brainstorm possible actions. Don’t rush into solutions — this step is about widening perspective and unlocking creativity.

Example:
I could book a CV review, sign up for a short course, or speak to someone who’s successfully made a career change.

W – Will / Way Forward

What will you do next?
This step turns insights into action. The person chooses their next step and sets a commitment — with accountability, timeframes, and motivation.

Example:
I’ll book a call with a career coach this week and block out time to rewrite my CV on Sunday.

Why the GROW Model Works

The GROW model gives structure without pressure. It works because:

  • It’s collaborative — the person finds their own answers
  • It’s easy to remember — ideal for new coaches or leaders
  • It creates momentum — small steps lead to bigger change

As a coach, mentor, or manager, your role is to guide the conversation — not solve the problem. The GROW coaching model helps you do exactly that, while keeping your sessions focused, supportive, and impactful.
